Posted this to XP basics group some hours ago, only one response telling me
to run Checkdisk which I did.
Maybe someone here would have some idea.

"XP Pro/SP2 and slipstreamed XP/SP2 CD.
Trying to run "sfc /scannow" get the message that it's the wrong disc for
the XP version installed or that the disc may be damaged.
Can't get out of this Retry/Information/Cancel unless I restart PC, even
trying to End Task from Task Manager doesn't work. This is the disc used to
install XP. No obvious marks on it but have
cleaned it anyway.
Have two optical drives and have tried it in both.
Have I got a damaged disc although it looks OK?
Would any of the post SP2 updates be causing this?
Advice appreciated."

Many thanks, following the directions there I can now run SFC.
Also it has I think pointed me to why the problem arose in the first place.
I have 3 physical HDD's split into a number of partitions and to avoid drive
letter confusion changed the optical drives to Y & Z. SFC was looking at
drive D for the files and they weren't there.
I think I'm right in that, can someone confirm it?

Kenny, you are correct. I just had to go into the registry and change my
source path to J: instead of I since I added a
Dvd drive. After doing that sfc worked fine.
