Can't run defrag or Chkdsk in XP

I haven't cleaned my computer in awhile so yesterday I tried to run defrag. I
got the message, "Disk Defrag has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on
Vol C. Please run Chkdsk /f. "

I attempted to do that, but then I got a message, "Chkdsk /f cannot run
because the volumet is in use by another process.

I thought maybe a recently added trial version of Windows Life One Care
might be the culprit, so I tried running the tune up. It skipped right over
defrag and then I got a message that said, "An unknown error prevented tune
up from performing this task."

What am I doing wrong?

Hello,

Chkdsk is scheduled to run. This means that you need to restart your
computer so that Chkdsk can run at startup. Once CHKDSK has completed, you
will be able to defrag.

Thanks for your reply. I tried running Chkdsk and then I tried shutting down,
restarting. That didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Apparently I have given you all something to talk about here but I really
could use an answer to my problem. I can't run defrag and my computer is
running REALLY slowly. I have checked for viruses, etc. Everything else
seems OK but it worries me that I can't run Chkdsk or defrag.

What is meant by "spamming the NG?"

Please try to quantify what you mean by "REALLY slowly." Describe some
things that are slow, and tell us what the times they take used to be
and what they are now.

Exactly how have you "checked for viruses, etc."?

Not all checks are equally good, and although I can't tell you for
sure what your problem is, I would not be so quick to rule out the
possibility (the likelihood, in your case) that you *are* infected.
