Can't retain passwords

Hi. I have a problem where WinXP doesn't remember my
passwords. I get the prompt to save the password, and
even if I check the box to save it, it asks for it
everytime as though it were the first. I tried resetting
my defaults but that didn't help. I just started using
Ourlook yesterday, and the same thing happens there when I
send/receive mail. Any advice is appreciated!

OL2000: (IMO) Your Password Is Not Retained in Windows 2000 or Windows XP

The above also applies to Internet Explorer and other applications that use the Protected Storage System Provider registry key to store passwords.

Doug,

Thanks for the help. I checked out the links and followed
the instructions, but I'm still being prompted for
passwords, asked to remember, and not having them
remembered. Interestingly, this does not happen in
Outlook Express. It does happen in Outlook, and every
website that prompts for a password.

Thanks a lot, Gary

Control panel> internet options>content>autocomplete>clear passwords and
forms. Clear cookies and temporary internet files as well and try the
sites again. This won't solve the outlook problem though.

Doug,

Thanks for the help, but I was not successful fixing the
problem using this approach. Could it be something
disabled in services?

If anything in Services, it would be the Protected Storage System Provider.

Thought I was on to a fix. Tried everything Doug has mentioned...

Following KB259416, XPpro etc.

When trying to assure set permissions and "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects"...."access is denied" dialog pops up when I hit "apply".

I've tried services, restarts, reinstall OL2000 - even a rebuild and reinstall of WinXPpro!!!

what's next?????

Mike,

You need to ensure that the Administrators group, and/or your username have the appropriate permissions. You can add users/groups to the root key permissions, then propogate them down.
