When I try to restart my PC, XP-home with SP-2 and all updates, I get the
blue screen and this message: "Stop error:C000021a Fatal system stor error a
status of: 0X00000402. If I shut it down and wait 3-4 minutes it will start
up just fine. Any idea what to do to fix this?

what has changed since this started happening?
Added any new hardware/software/updates?
Used any Backup programs to restore your system to a previous state?

I wish i could say. I have no idea what may have preceeded this problem.
Can't think of a change I've made prior to the onset of this. Seems like
these numbers should tell us something about what is wrong? Also, why will it
restart after being off forjust a short while?

well, the numbers/error code do tell us what's wrong, somewhat

The difficult part is the parameter, 0X00000402..
Do you have Norton's System Works w/GoBack?
PCanytime?
Those are two of the things mentioned in the Google searches, but what it
seems to be is either a driver conflict, or a permission change has been
made.
Check the event viewer to see if there is a more detailed error description
I guess a couple of things you could try.
Do a system restore to a point prior to this error code issue.
Or, try a repair installation, which will leave your personal files, doc's
etc, intact, but repair/reinstall the system files.
Gotta go, Nightmares and Dreamscapes just started....

I got rid of GoBack - no help. I had PCanywhere but took it our some time
ago. Pls tell me how to do this: Check the event viewer to see if there is a
more detailed error description.

Oh, okay, it's very easy.
Click start>Admin tools>event viewer
Now, what you are looking for would be in Applications or System, and errors
are indicated by the red circle, warnings are yellow, and information blue.
Double click on the red error indicators, there may be a lot of them, but
read each one to locate those that may pertain, in particular, look for
Winlogon.exe and Csrss.exe errors..
I am assuming that you are able to start Windows with the shutdown and wait
2-3 minutes, rather than the restart, but if not, start in Safe Mode.
One note, for the GoBAck, I don't know if it is important or not, but the
recommended method was to first disable it by pressing the space bar during
bootup to access the GoBack options menu, then allowing the computer to
complete the bootup process, then remove it from add/remove.
So, it may be that it is still active in the boot sector. Do a search for
Goback, Roxio, to see if anything is found.

There are other possibilities, but, there really are many, so it may be a
time saver to perform a repair install.
It may be a third party software conflict..or a driver update..do you recall
installing any new software, or driver updates?

Here's what I found but can't understand:
The Windows Securitiy Center Service was unable to load instances of
FirewallProduct from WMI
and another red circle was
Event filter with query "SELECT *FROM_Instance OperationEvent WHERE target
instance ISA 'AntivirusProduct' OR TargetInstance ISA 'FirewallProduct" could
nto be (re)activatted in nemespace "//./ROOT/SecurityCente" because error
0x80041010. Events may not be delivered through this filter until the problem
is corrected.

It's very odd..those errors indicate a remote connection problem, as well as
a scripting error..those were from the application or system categories?
What's listed in Security?

Also, click on the source in the column headers until you see winlogon, and
Csrss..
There has to be more errors than what you listed.

Okay, what is you firewall, XP? or some other?

Those errors where listed under Application. Clicking Souce column shows only
MsiInstller
There are no errors under Security.
Under System there's many of these:
"The Application Management service terminated wiht the following error: The
specified module cannot be found.
Under Antivirus there are no current errors.

I'm going to do a reboot and then see exactly what the event viewer tells us.

click that source tab a few times to get the alphabetical order to list the
reverse order, Z-A
I forgot to mention a rather important point..with those errors there should
