Can't reinstall IE

I am having problems with IE and want to reinstall. After browsing the
internet and getting a couple of solutions, have determined that it's not
that simple for me. When I try to reinstall, I get the "newer version
already detected" message. Or I'll get the "inset Win XP SP 2 disk" prompt.

I think my problem is (and I could be wrong) that this is on a system that
originally had ME and came with an XP upgrade disk. This upgrade disk is SP
1. I then did the Windows Update to SP 2. So therefore I don't have an SP 2
disk to insert. I tried the upgrade disk but it has an error and says the
file can't be found, so I can't finish the install.

What am I doing wrong here??

See the SP2-specific section of http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

NB: If your problems are caused by hijackware, reinstalling IE won't help
cos Windows is what's infected, Jenkins.

I don't believe it is Hijackware. This computer just got completely
"restored". And after I updated Windows with every critical update
(including SP 2) and upgraded IE to 6, I started having problems not long
after. I am very aware of the dangers of the internet and I run Virus and
multiple spy/malware programs.

I tried that link you provided already. When I get to the registry edit
<IsInstalled (REG_DWORD)>, that setting is already at "0". And I still get
the "newer Version" message window.

Tell us more. What problems?

A great deal depends on what exactly was done to "restore...the computer",
who did it, and whether either the Windows Firewall or a third-party
firewall is/was enabled. Check for hijackware anyway, including posting
your HijackThis log to an appropriate forum, /not/ here.

Since you have SP2 installed, you shouldn't be taking that method: Uninstall
SP2 via Add/Remove Programs, reboot, then reinstall it. Do all of this with
your anti-virus application disabled and all other applications closed,
remaining physically offline as much as possible.

Specfically I am having the most problems with Macromedia Flash. I get
fairly frequent crashes with "Flash.ocx", which in turn crashed IE. I have
reinstalled Flash numerous times with no luck. Also, I am not so sure the
problem IS with Flash.

Also I will get the standard program crash box (for error reporting) and
that will direct me to a microsoft page that will tell me either: (1) Problem
caused by Macromedia Flash or (2) Problem caused by device driver (unknown).

Just an FYI, I am not a dummy when it comes tho this sort of thing (nor an
expert). Usually, through my own knowledge or through research, I can find
the solution on my own. But this one's got me. I think I can safely assume
that there are a lot of people out there that don't have the "full" XP
install disk. What do they do?

Please include previous message in all of your replies. We have no idea
what you're talking about.

Sorry, but I don't like to "clutter" the posts. Besides, the subject didn't
change...

No offense, but if you can't realize that I was attempting to be more
detailed (by your request), then I ask that you let someone else try.

Hi Jenkins :-)

You mention you are having problems with the Flash.ocx. Have you checked
your firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or
block? Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless
you turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all,
and it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked
the Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash
(4X5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

It could also be the MicroMedia Flash Active-X player

You might also check the information here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1073491290

Also...your Flash installation could be corrupt. See this section here: To
uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/kn...fm?id=tn_12727

and see if this helps:

Disable the Flash OCX
http://www.flash2be.com/xpi/archives..._flash_ocx.php

Something you might look at here:

FlashPlayerControl 1.1
http://www.downloadseeker.com/8590.html

Hope this helps :-)
