i used undo a bunch of times to find part of the document i'm working on. i
undid parts that i want and now it will not let me redo far enough

As soon as you do anything after a series of Undos, you wipe out the
possibility of redoing anything except anything you subsequently undo. If
you want to preserve text created in the middle of a series of actions to be
undone, it's a good idea to copy/paste it into another document before
undoing.
