Hi.
I'm still stuck on this security update. After installing it Windows
stalls before the "welcome" screen.
If I push F8 and boot in debugging mode, all is fine.

Any ideas?

See if you can uninstall that update in safe mode via Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs. Make sure to tick the checkbox on top.

You could also try System Restore to go back to the most
recent working state.

Actually, I restored using True Image...but it still leaves me without
the security update!

Well, that particular security update replaces the system file "rpcrt4.dll"
only and there were no problems here when installing that update on all
of the machines. Therefore, you may want to try the installation again,
this time via manual download:
"Security Update for Windows XP (KB933729)"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-22ce31ee7b8b

If the problem reappears, there is some interfering software installed
and this could be malware as well since the "Remote Procedure Call
Runtime" is a frequent target. Good luck.

If I simply replace that file with the new one I can grab it from
another machine), is that the update installed?

In my services I have RPC set to auto (started) and RPC locator disabled.

Thanks for your help.

Although I didn't try out, there are some disadvantages and therefore,
I do not recommend this procedure due to the following reasons:

- The Windows File Protection may replace that file with the previous
version from the DLLcache.
- That update will be offered (Microsoft Update) furthermore.

The RPC Locator service should be started on demand. Again, good luck.
