Are they using older versions of Word? In that case, read below:

In Office 2007 Microsoft introduced a new file format called the Microsoft
Open Office XML Format (.docx). This format is not compatible with older
versions of Microsoft Word or with alternative operating systems like Linux
or Mac OS X. Nor is it compatible with other word processing applications
like OpenOffice, Lotus 123, or NeoOffice.

There is a dashboard widget available for MACs but for PC's there is only an
online converter at this time, located here:

I hope this helps, please let me know.

To add to what Kathleen wrote: There are two additional choices. You can
save your documents in "Word 97-2003" format. That can be done for
individual documents or you can set it as the default format. Or the
people receiving your 2007 documents can download and install the Office
Compatibility Pack (assuming they are Office users). It's available at:

Note that the Office compatibility pack only works for Office XP/2002 and
higher. For those using Office 2000 and lower, they would have to convert
Open XML formats to binary file formats from within Windows Explorer or via
the link to the converter that I posted.

Ah, yes...good point. I should have noted that as a caveat.
