I went to tools and selected folder option to see hidden folders. They came
up but when I went back to hide them again there was no folder (or whatever
it is listed under) menu to do this. How did it disappear? I can't re-hide
my files.

Explorer -Tools-Folder Options-View-Hidden Folders and Files and check
"Do not show hidden folders and files", though I don't know why you
would want to do this.

Novice computer users should have System and Hidden files hidden from view.
These users tend to want to delete files they don't recognize and screw up their systems.
