Can't Publish--Why?

Would anybody know why my web site won't publish? I have tried it on two different free sites--Powow and Tripod, but it doesn't work on either one. I don't know about Powow, but I do know that my Tripod site is FrontPage compatible. In both cases, I'll upload using their system and it will tell me that I have uploaded successfully; the individual files will show up and I can click on them, but they don't "come together" like they should. I have tried what people have said to do before, like making the picture files smaller and shortening the file names, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. It looks the way it should in the preview mode of FrontPage. I have a registered domain, but I don't want to do anything there unless I am sure it is going to work, so that's why I want to "test" it on free sites first. Any suggestions?

Test it on your real domain - why mess with freebies that say the work but usually don't.

Your testing can be done on your own PC within Front
Page. If you preview in a browser you can even check
links to other sites if you have included them on your
site. This is referred to as a disk-based web (as opposed
to a server-based web). The only things you will not be
able to test are things that require the use of Front
Page Extensions such as forms. You could set up a server
on your PC with Extensions to test those things out but I
am guessing that is beyond your undertaking.

You should have no worries with publishing your site to
its final location for testing. Until you give out the
domain name, no one but you can look at the site in
progress. As you test, you can delete what you don't want
on the host server.

As to what is happening on the Tripod site, my guess is
that their uploading system does not uplaod all of the
files from your Front Page disk based web and that this
is what is causing your difficulties.

Bite the bullet and get a real web host.

I wanted to test everything like links and thumbnails to make sure it works before the whole world sees it. I thought if it doesn't work on a free site, it won't work anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best host to use? I would need one that lets you have A LOT of space, because my web site is about my favorite TV shows and will be done like a scrapbook and my collection is HUGE

A waste of time because free sites generally don't offer much...so you'd be testing nothing. Get on a decent host server and test there...unveil it when your ready.

There's a whole thread from yesterday where I asked for Recommended Windows Server hosts...check it out.

Most hosts want you to post your site to a folder named "Public" that you create under your user name. Ex. Hostname/username/public/You also need to make sure that the "main" page of your web site is named "Index" if it is not named index most hosts will not recognize this as the starting page. Hope this helps. !!

This normally only applies when hosted on Unix/Linux servers or shared IP accounts.
