I have a Win98SE machine with all Win and Office updates installed .

I use it as a backup to maintain certain IIS 6 FrontPage extension enabled
sites using FrontPage 2000. The machine was in perfect running condition and
being used daily.

I installed a program by First Place Software called WebPosition 3 on this
box. Everything that I use Citrix, ftp, web enabled email, etc. still works
perfectly.

However, now when I attempt to publish a FrontPage web a using 'File /
Publish Web", typing in the url, and pushing the "Publish" button, the applet
that used to pop up stating "Name and Password Required" NO LONGER APPEARS.

Removing / Reinstalling both FrontPage and / or WebPosition does not restore
the Publish function.

I contacted First Place and they flatly denied their software could be at
fault and told me to contact Microsoft !!

First Place did share that their program uses dll's starting with "fp", and
I have located about 2 dozen files beginning with "fp" in my
C:\Windows\System subdir that could be involved.

I'm theorizing one of their files may have over -written a Microsoft "fp"
peface dll ???

QUESTION: Does anyone know what dll or other file in FrontPage 2000 causes
the "Name and Password Required " applet to execute ???

I understand, but it is not actually a connection issue. If the applet that
normally appeared asking for username and password would appear, I'm certain
that FrontPage would connect to my remote web server.

The rub is that the applet never appears to give me the opportunity to type
in my username and password.

WHAT I REALLY NEED IS A MICROSOFT PERSON WHO KNOWS THE NAME OF THE FILE AND
ITS INSTALLED LOCATION ON MY HARD DRIVE SO I CAN VERIFY THAT IT IS THERE and
not written ove by the WebPosition install.

I've used Synmantec Ghost to restore the machine to it's usable form and it
works fine. As soon as I install the WebPosition 3 program, the FrontPage
applet for username and password simply stops executing.

Call MS Tech Support.

It is a connection issue, as the dialog would not appear unless FP was trying to connect to a
location that require a login, and it uses IE connection settings. If there isn't a connection, then
you would not see the login dialog.

OK, I'll grant you that it is a "quasi" connection issue. We are getting
closer!

I don't have a site specific SSL certificate on this domain, but the server
secure certificate is "shared" over all Ip's in my Class C to make secure
publishing (443) possible.

I tried to connect using port 443 and FrontPage does talk to the server
because it presents the message "The name of the computer you are connecting
to does not match the name ofn the certificate. Do you wish to continue?.
(This is the normal response I get before the username/password appears).

It is at this point that communication must be stopping as the applet for
u/p fails to appear.

When it first happened I had my tech people checking extensions, etc. and we
determined it was specific to my machine with WebPosition installed. (And
again, restoring the box from ghost allows the FrontPage to work properly
again)

This is comical that the both of us are spending all of these billable
minutes debugging 5 year old stuff. I'm just anal about understanding why
stuff tops working and why the authors of software always say their code is
not the problem (-:

No.

I just mentioned the 443 information because it tells me that some level of
communication is taking place between FrontPage and my IIS server.

Again, this machine is a relic, but loaded up with useful tcp and udp
protocol programs that back up my XPPro clients. This all started when my
normal client box went to the bench for some repairs. I popped WP on the
backup box to run a specific report I needed and the fun began.

Again, all other TCP progams on the box (secure web mail, Citrix client,
Terminal Server client, ftp, on an on work fine.)

I truly think First Place uses somehting named fp*.* that matches something
Microsoft FrontPage calls fp*.* and the two are colliding.

Since FP uses IE for password management, have you made sure to add your site to the IE trusted zone
Passwords used by FP are "stored" using IE
In IE use Tools > Internet Options > Security
Click on 'Trusted' and on 'Custom Level'
Make sure the selection at the bottom is set to:
'Automatic logon with current username and password' and click OK
Click on 'Sites' and add your site URL in the 'Add this Web Site to the Zone', and OK, OK
