Yes, yes, yes, I have tried all the suggested reasons for this
and still no joy. Can anyone suggest how I might isolate the
cause of this problem?

The printer is plugged into my desktop WinXP computer, and
my WinXP laptop has no problem on the same network.

you tried installing a win2k printer driver on the xp machine. I know xp
and 2000 drivers are usually one in the same, but i've seen a few printers
that needed a specific driver for each.

But yes I've checked the HP web site and the printer CD and there
doesn't seem to be any additional drivers available.
