Can't print to LPT1 after installing Win2K

my work pc was recently "upgraded" to Windows 2000, now I can't print
to my local HP III laserjet printer. Message says 'device not
connected'
I've removed and re-installed the driver.
I've swapped cables and printers and it still doesn't work.
I even tried a command prompt "dir <lpt1" and still get the error.

I can print to the shared network printer.

The computer 'guru' believes the port is bad, but it was fine under
Windows ME.

Any other switches, options or configurations that I need to change.
No one wants to fix it since I can print to the network, but there are
things that a local printer makes much easier, so I am determined to
fix it myself.

In the event that the port is "bad", could I get a USB to Parallel
adapter and hook the printer up to a usb port?

Thanks in advance.
TJ

change the Bios configuration on the port. If the machine is a Dell, this
is exactly the issue. The KBs say XP but thay are also relative for Win2k.
