Basically, my Toshiba Satellite 2615DVD hadn't been running very well, so a friend of my brother's took it to see what's wrong with it. He works with computers at a major university, so I felt comfortable giving it to him. He suggested an upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional, from Windows 98. As I understand it, he took everything off my hard drive, saved my files, and installed Windows 2000 Pro.
According to my computer, the DVD drive is functioning properly.
However, now it won't play any DVDs. Whevever I insert one, I get an error message saying "There is no Windows 2000 compatible DVD decoder installed on this system." Then it goes on to explain what a decoder is, and suggests I go to
www.hardware-update.com to see if I can find what I need there.
I thought perhaps I needed to go to toshiba.com, as that's the manufacturer. But now I'm not sure where to go and what I actually need.
This computer is approximately 5 years old, and has played many DVDs in the past, on the old operating system.
Can anyone suggest what site/s to go to and what I actually need to download, if anything? Bear in mind, free downloads are about all I can afford.
Thanks.
