sI use my laptop on both a corporate microsoft network and on a home
microsoft network. At either location, others can PING my laptop only when I
am booted into the "SAFE Mode with Networking". I have tried using
'msconfig' to load all services exactly as they are enabled for the SAFE Mode
but user are unable to PING me in that configuration, even from the local
sub-net(no SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI or STARTUP files are being processed or
loaded). The Widows firewall shows to be disabled and no anti-virus,
anti-spam etc. are being loaded.

Other symptoms ... possibly related:
* unable to load and run Windows Live Mail Client
* HP All In One Printer will not recognize my pc on the network for
scanning but I can print
* Corporate HELP desk cannot connect to me with remote 'shadowing'
* There was a time 4 months ago when all of this worked ... including
PING from other users.

What anti-virus / anti-malware protection do you use? Look for anti-worm
protection, that can block pings / SMBs.

And look for LSP / Winsock corruption.

You may want to disable IPSec for a test.

Robert,
I'm having the same problem. What is IPSec and how does one disable
it? And should it be disabled on both the desktop and laptop?

I have a home network with Linksys 4-Port Router with WinXP on desktop
and Vista on the laptop.

Thanks

You may try to disable it on both computers.

As I stated in my previous note, I don't know anything about IPSec -
where is it and how does one locate it?

All .. tku for the inputs. But before I go down all of these somewhat
tedious diagnostic paths, am I not correct in assuming that all of the
corruptions and errors noted and observed in the 'msconfig' Diagnostic mode
should also be evident in the SAFE Mode with Networking as long as sirvices
started in the two modes are identical?

My own logic tells me that since the PING works inthe SAFE Mode, it should
also work in the 'msconfig' Diagnostic mode if services between the two modes
are mirrored ... it would therefore be helpful to clearly understand the
difference between these two modes regarding PING.
