Is your Windows/External firewall configured to allow 3389 traffic (Remote
Desktop)?
You said XP - Only XP Professional has Remote Desktop.. You have XP
Professional, right?
The "timed out" response is because the echo response is turned off by
default in the Windows Firewall.
Do you have a NAT IP or an external (Internet) IP? (Private like
192.168.xxx.xxx or public?)
(Sounds like public - but need to make sure.)
