i've got a strange problem i haven't seen before, wonderin' if someone
else has.

setting: home network, cable internet, dlink wireless router, cat5
cable into main machine, wireless from upstairs, both machines using
xp home.

what works: both machines can browse the net, both machines receiving
ip address from dhcp server (192.168.0.X). downstairs machine can see
upstairs machine and access a shared drive.

what doesn't work: upstairs machine cannot see downstairs machine nor
ping it.

real problem: upstairs machine is 192.168.0.3 and that machine cannot
ping that address.

question: what causes a machine to lose contact with itself/ip
address?

If you have a box that can't ping itself, then the TCP/IP installation is
hosed. Try uninstalling TCP/IP, take a reboot, and reinstall TCP/IP

You probably have the firewall on.

Take that off and see if it fixes the problem.

from your upstairs machine, try ping 127.0.0.1 if you don't get sucessful replies then it means your TCP/IP stack is not working. Check that your network card is fitted correctly and that it is installed in hardware devices with the drivers working properly. If you still have no luick try opening the network connections and right click the connection your having trouble and select repair. Hope this helps you
