Can't open zipped files coming in my email. They are
automatically opening in Excel and giving me the
message "This file is not in a recognizable format."

Do you have a zip program? There are a number of free ones available (look
on alt.comp.freeware in Google Groups for the best current one). When you
install it, it should grab your zip files if you make it the Default Zip
program.
If you do have one, then the file association has gone west. Right click on
a zip file and choose Open with and Other. Browse to your zip program and
tick Always Use This Program.
