I have downloaded 2 files, voip.GZ and voip.DS which contain firmware
upgrades for my Minitar MVA11A ATA box. However I can't find a way of opening
them. I've tried on my PC running XP, and on my Sony laptop running Vista,
but all I get is "Windows cannot open this file" and referred to the web
dialogue box.

I've tried 7-zip.org but it wanted 1 hr 20m to download, and didn't seem to
have any reference to .DS files anyway.

I've spent a day on this so far. Has anyone any advice they could offer and
which is simple for me to understand?

For GZ archives you can download and use IZArc. I'm assuming the .DS
module is the actual firmware code that doesn't require unpacking.

Thanks, I'll give it a try and let you know how I fare. I've looked at the
site, but at the moment, am not sure what I download. I'll probably work it
out, but I can't understand why either of my computers can't open the files
automatically with the provided software. The Minitar supplier tells me they
should

Well, I've had a look at www.izarc.org, and all I can find to download is
Driver Detective. I did that, and was told that 7 drivers were out of date
and that I should register and update them all. I assume that (a) will cost
money and (b) I don't want the risk of introducing more problems when I can't
solve the one I've got. The PC has just been upgraded and is working well,
although I know that the video driver could do with an upgrade ... and then I
could even run Vista! But there seemed to be nothing in izarc.org that looked
like it could open zip files. I may be wrong, I'm pretty much an amateur, but
I somehow feel the problem should not be so hard. I've spent all day on it
and have got nowhere. But perhaps I'm just stupid and can't see the
application I should be downloading. Is the application obvious? I seem to
remember my PC used to have WinZip, but I now can't find it. Perhaps I should
download that? Grateful for any further advice.

Well, I've had some success. I found the application (I'll swear it was not
there before --- I must have been in the wrong place). Downloaded it
sucessfully, but I still can't get it to open the voip file.

Under IZArc - C:\ Docs and Settings?Owner\My Docs\voip.gz I get:

in the left box: voip.gz, and in the box to the right: voip.img IZArcIMG
Archive 26/11/2008 4:30 6,158,448 81%

but no amount of clicking will actually open anything. Just can't understand
what I'm doing wrong. I've looked at the help files, but to no avail.
Grateful for further advice.

I don't use that zip program and I am unfamiliar with the hardware you are
trying to update. However, I went to the Minitar site and downloaded the
most recent firmware update for networking.

The download was a zip file (voip-0022.zip). That zip contained two
files...dsp.ds and voip.gz.

The *.ds file only needs to be extracted. The voip.gz is a compressed file
containing voip.img.

While those files may not be the ones you need, I am reasonably sure the
ones you want were packaged in the same way; therefore...

1. Click on the *ZIP* file you downloaded (you may have to double
click...I'm lazy and use point to select, click to open). Your new
compression program should then open and show you the two files contained in
the zip.

If the compression program does not open the zip you clicked on then it
is not set as the default program for that file type. No matter, open the
compression program, click "File" in its title bar then "Open" in the drop
down menu then browse to the file you want to open.

2. Once the downloaded zip file is open, extract both files to a folder,
Desktop is fine.

3. You need do nothing further with the *.ds file.

4. You once again need to use your compression program to open voip.gz.
Once open, extract the *.img file it contains to wherever you put the the
*.ds file.

You should now have the two files - *.ds and *.img - you need for updating.
However, the updating seems to require a particular sequence...see this page

I don't know if that page is pertinent to your hardware or not. Point is,
there is a specific way to update and you need to determine what it is and
follow it. That includes the directory location of the unzipped files from
Step #1 above; the Desktop may or may not be satisfactory, I don't know.

Also, according to that page, the voip.gz file need not be uncompressed to
the *.img file in it; apparently, the updating process will unzip it and
extract the necessary files from the image file. Again, I don't know but I
suspect that is correct.

Don't forget to dump all the files you unzipped after you update, no need to
keep them. If you want, keep the zip file that contained them but again, no
need.
