Word 2007 can certainly open, say, *.doc files from Word 97 to Word
2003. Can you try these attachments on a different installation with
Word 2007? On a different installation with an earlier version of Word?

If the attachment doesn't open there, there's a couple of things which
could've gone wrong: the attachment went havoc sometime between the
sender and you; or it ain't a Word file to start with (or a much older
version than I'd like to think of).
