I'm new to XP (home edition) and I'm having problems
opening .doc files. The old comp used MS Word and this
one uses MS Works. When I try to open it I get: "This
file does not have a program assocciated with it for
performing this action. Create an assoc in the folder
options in control panel". I've followed all the
instructions the "help" button offers. The closest I got
opened Work's Word-Processor to a page of gibberish.

I'd be very grateful if someone would help,
SH

You have to figure out in the association, as a command line option, to
tell Works how to open the file as a Word (not Works) file. Maybe this
covered in the Works help file, or if you need additional help, ask on
the Works newsgroup ...

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

You need to purchase Word or get the Word reader (you can
at least read the document but not edit)

Go to control panel---folders---file types and make sure .doc is associated
with MS Word. If not change it. .WKS is for MS Works.

Oops. Do you even have Word installed on your system?
