WIn 2000 Pro crashed after downloading a patch. Were advised to get XP Pro. We had to install by booting it to the CD. It installed nicely. However it looks like it installed in addition to Win 2000 Pro and did not upgrade 2000 Pro. We can see all the programs on the drive, but can not access them. How do I get the programs converted to XP Pro and get rid of Win 2000 Pro

We are getting desparate as there are many things we need. Thanks.

Installing the OS in the manner you specified resulted in a dual-boot
configuration. You will have to reinstall the software within Windows XP.
You should then be able to use the programs to access any existing data. If
you had installed XP from within Win 2K you would have then been able to
perform an upgrade. If you eliminate the references to Win 2K from within
the boot.ini file you will no longer be prompted to choose an OS during the
boot sequence.

Kind Regards,

Start over and ensure you make it a clean install. Boot the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one - which is what
appears to have happened last time
