I have a user who needs access to another user's mailbox (on Exchange 2007)
for a few weeks while he's out on vacation.

The user going on vacation went to Tools->Options->Delegates and added the
other user to his list of delegates and gave him 'Editor' permissions for
everything. The user then restarted Outlook.

The user trying to access the delegated mailbox went to Tools->Account
Settings, selected his Exchange server account and clicked on 'Change' and
then in the Account Wizard clicked on 'More Settings'. The on the 'Advanced'
tab he clicked on 'Add' and typed the name of the other user in the text box.

The other user's mailbox shows up in his Outlook folders list, but when he
tries to select it, gets a permission error.

Did we do something wrong? How do we fix this?

Show the user how to use File | Open | Other User's Folder to view the other person's Inbox instead. Because the user does not have permission to the root folder, he won't be able to open the other mailbox as a secondaary mailbox.

We are having the exact same issue. Sadly using the File > Open > Other
User's Folder is not going to work for us. We need something like the
additional mail box to alert selected individuals of a incoming mail. Well
in our case fax from the faxing service.

I would just send a copy to everyone who would generally see a fax but that
would cause too much use of system resources to send a copy of a fax to
nearly everyone in the office. So a incoming fax is routed to this "Fax"
inbox and those who have delegated access to the "Fax" inbox can access them,
but they also need to be alerted that there is one there.

So after adding that "Fax" inbox like Jerry did, we do get it showing up in
the left navigation window but when trying to click on it we get the error
"Cannot display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook cannot access the
specified folder location"

Please tell us how to open the permissions of the root folder like you
mentioned or unless you have another suggestion.

The mailbox owner needs to grant "folder visible" permission to the root of the mailbox, as well as appropriate permission -- at least Reviewer -- on the Inbox itself.

The user who needs access then goes into Tools | E-mail Accounts or Tools | Services (depending on the Outlook version), brings up the properties for the Exchange Server service, and on the Advanced tab, adds the mailbox.

Thanks Sue, I was doing that to the itself and didn’t realize that you had to
do that to the mailbox too.
