first, what OS do you have?
second what are you using for antivirus?
if you are using AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials it shuts off WD and
you cannot use it.
AVG has a conflict with it
MSE has WD incorporated in it and that is why it shuts off WD

As with dbown100 above, we must know your full and exact OS and if you are
running any antimalware that does not work with Windows Defender.

Ok. Running Windows Vista 64 version. No Malware as I thought Windows
defender was doing this.

Windows Defender is antispyware. It doesn't cover the full range.

At this point, from your symptoms, it seems likely you are infected.

I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, but you won't be able to
handle that until your system is clean.

Try a scan at safety.live.com

This will take a good deal of time, but you need to be clean in order to
install and update a current antivirus.

After that, go to www.microsoft.com and download Microsoft Security
Essentials. When it is updated to current definitions, run a quickscan
followed by a full scan of your system.

1 What messages? (verbatim, which means word-for-word) you are receiving ?

2 What is the antivirus/security suite installed,
and what other security software are you running, if any?

3 Also, could you supply some information on what your firewall is, a 3rd
party firewall being used ?, etc. etc. .

Me too! and i've spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out what to do. I'm
running Vista 32 bit version. A worm took out my system, and I had it fixed
at the shop but defender has never run since. I get "Windows Defender
encountered an error: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service ot
stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support
for how to start a service manually."

Great.. restarting ddn't work. So I found defender's property value and
sure enough, was already set to "auto" so that fix didn't work, either.

Another source I found on the web said to unistall it, and I go to the list
of programs, and Defender isn't there to unistall. Can't figure it out, so
download a new copy, which aborts:

"You do not need to install this sofrtware because Windows Defender is
included in Windows Vista. You can access Windows Defender from the Security
section of the Windows Control Panel."

I've moved, and don't have access to my techy guy again. As far as I know, I
have Microsoft Security Essentials. When trying to unistall Defender I saw a
program called "Protector Suite QL 5.6" but i have no idea what it does and
it doesn't give me the option to unistall it, either.

Anyone got any ideas that a basically non-technologically adept person can
use to solve this?
