Hi
I'm sorry I haven't a clue if this is the right place to ask this - but here
goes anyway and your help would be appreciated.
A friend & colleague uses Microsoft Word X for Mac and whenever she sends me
a Word document attachment I can't read it. I run on XP Pro - have Office Pro
Suite 2000. Is there anything I can do to be able to automatically open these
documents.
Thanks
Mardler C

If you're getting a Word document, and it's called FILENAME, save it to disk
& rename it FILENAME.DOC ....then see if you can open it. Without a file
extension, you can't associate a program with a file type.

What is the file extension? (last three letters in the filename following
the dot)

FYI there are word newsgroups. See this link. Look down the left side for
microsoft.public.word and expand it to see the choices.

File extension as received was .doc which is why I couldn't understand why it
wouldn't open - or rather it would open but was gobble=de=gppk of about two
lines and nothing else - in what I know to have been a two page document.
Thanks

at the microsoft site where you download READERS for word, excel and others, there is a conversion/translation program.
might give it a try.

Let me point out two things:

1. You should ask this question in a Word newsgroup, not here in an XP
one. The people there are much better equipped to help you with Word
problems.

2. Not being able to open a file and being able to open it with
"gobbledegook" are two entirely different symptoms. When you don't
describe your symptom carefully the *first* time, you waste the time
of those trying to help you. I'm sure Harry would never have asked you
what the extension was if you had originally told us about the
"gobbledegook."

I'm not sure if MAC docs and MS docs are compatible. Perhaps not.
