in hotmail i cant open any attchments that are xls it says its either not a
supported file or because the file has been damaged for example it was sent
as an e-mail and wasnt correctly decoded

An .xls file is an Excel file. If you are trying to open it in Excel and
having problems, post in an Excel newsgroup. If you're trying to open it
directly from the attachment, it may be that your file associations need to
be repaired. Try this:

Start | Run, and type

excel.exe /regserver

and press Enter.
