We're gonna assume the Samba server is configured
correctly, I guess.
You need an account on the Linux box, Tim. If the
username and password on the Linux machine match the ones
you're using on the Windows XP machine the thing should
be pretty seamless - otherwise the Samba server is gonna
ask for a username and password.
Some applications will not allow you to connect as root
from remote - so it might be a good idea to create a user
on the Linux box if you haven't already.
You can find pretty extensive documentation at
http://www.samba.org - they should be able to answer any
question you have.
