I have tried to make Remote assistance work across the internet and
across my LAN. I have tried to make it work using MSN Messenger and
using the invitation method in Start > Help & Support.

When I try to make it work on my local LAN, no matter which of two
computers (with different XP Pro installations) tries to start the
sharing, the other computer pops up a box that says:

"Remote Assistance
Loading . . "


Then almost immediately another box pops up saying:


"Remote Assistance Web Page Dialog


Remote assistance failed please try again"


When I try to make the hookup with a computer across the Internet, if
he initiates the request I get the same messages on my computer. If I
initiate the request it acts like it's working but, he can only view
my machine, it does not allow him to take control. (Maybe I just
don't know how to give him control.)

I have searched Google groups for help on this and I haven't found
anything that seems like it could apply to my situation.

For what it's worth, Application Sharing works for me. It seems like
these two things would be associated, but apparently not.

I had the same problem, and followed an advise to reinstall SP2
completely. I.e. download the complete package from MS, and then install
it on top of your present Windows. After I did this my Remote Assistance
and Remote Desktop worked.

I've had this many times. (for me) It is usually a firewall issue of some
kind - windows, software firewall, mcafee, wireless router or router. I
would really like it if they could use a standard port such as 443 or
something that is likely to work all of the time.

Thanks for your reply.

In my case I don't use a firewall of any kind. I do use a router but
I was under the impression that enabling UPnP took care of router
related problems but because it wasn't working I also forwarded the
port to my machine.

Thanks for your reply.

I may try that, but I'm having the same problem on a second local
computer that had SP2 installed much later than on this machine.

I'm reluctant to do something as radical as reinstall SP2, but if I
decide to try it I have two questions.

Do l have to uninstall the existing SP2?

I can't figure out a way to download a copy of SP2. When I go to the
MS website it checks my machine and only offers to download things I
don't have and I have SP2 so it won't offer it for download.


Note: I have found that when I request Remote Assistance it works
completely. The other person can view and control my computer. It
will not work at all the other way as I get the failure message given
in my original post.
