Can't make movies in WMM, was able to

Hadn't tried processing any video in WMM for around 30 days. Since then,
acquired high-speed internet (so now am using LAN instead of dialup, if this
should have any connection) and now when trying to save a movie to my
computer at high quality 320x240 (small) either WMM is "not responsive" & has
to be shut down using Task Manager, or WMM appear to complete the project but
only saves a 16MB or so sized wmv file which isn't playable. Have tried to
save projects with very little video, only some credits. Have tried saving
around 4 minutes of video. No use of transitions or effects. In the past
(prior to today) have been able to load WMM w/ clips, pile on the effects &
transitions, etc. with no problem. Codexes are up to date (if Windows Media
9 is up to date. We got Media Player 10 shouldn't there be WM10 codexs by
now?) - anyone out there with any potential solutions?

Well there are a lot of possibilities such as filetypes or codec issues but
my first guess.....
There are a couple things people that are used to dialup connections
sometimes don't understand. Those things are that you are ALWAYS connected
to the internet, I know you already know that but do you truly know what
that means?, meaning you are ALWAYS vulnerable. Maybe this isn't the case
here but generally when somebody first switches from dialup to DSL they very
quickly succumb to viruses and all sorts of malware because they don't have
the proper protection installed. I have a security section on my website
that deals with a lot of this and some software I recommend getting. If this
isn't the problem then post again telling us what the file extensions are on
the videos, images, audio, you are using.

Hello -
I am running Zone Alarm, use AVG anti-virus & MS Anti-Spyware beta and
sometimes Spybot. On Zone Alarm, any attempts to try anything result in a
popup notifying me... Have a P4, 1GB RAM, nVidia 128MB GEForce 5200, all
Windows updates updated, have tried my best to remain free of viral & other
infections... but could this be the case?

If your programs don't find any problems, you likely are ok. In this one
case I hope Wojo isn't right!! ha ha Maybe you could try to 'restore' the
computer if you haven't put any programs which are unavailable to you now on
the machine. A restore is easily reversible, and you could find out if MP10
is causing a problem....I've done a lot of restores whenever I have
conflicts. Read enough about it so that you know what it means though...it
doesn't change any of the files or settings. Click 'start' 'help and
support' 'system restore' and read about it there. Seems to me I had
problems with MP10 originally too....don't know exactly what I did since I
have it now. If you have it you could uninstall and later reinstall after
you check to see if your MM works. Good luck.

Hi - System Restore isn't an option. I tried this yesterday. The computer
went thru the motions and then announced it could not restore to the earlier
point, which was only going back to December 26th... Is this a sign of my
having "put any programs which are unavailable" to me or of a viral thing
taking over? Have had MP10 since it was available so why would it be the
cause? PapaJohn's site recommended unchecking all the filters in Movie
Maker, anything ending in .ax, which I did and had no improvement. I am at
this point considering wiping the whole system and starting over, something
that has been my lot with XP far more times than the years it has been out,
at least ten so far...

the Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page of my website has a number of
things that might help.

are your source files plain vanilla... like DV-AVI from a digital camcorder
or BMP images, or do they include something that Movie Maker can't
effectively handle?

H Papa John!
Went to your WMM site last night, that is where I got the idea to uncheck
all the codexes under "compatibility", which didn't make any difference. I
am trying to reduce a 640x480 file to 320x240, a WMV file. That's all, no
effects or transitions or any other processing involved. It's a relatively
small file compared to what I had previously been able to process w/ no prior
failures. Reinstalling the O/S seems to be my option...

I just hate to see you do all that if it's something to do with your source
file... like a WMV file that for some reason needs to be re-indexed....

Oh have no fear I am definitely wrong on this one! Evan your protection is
just fine. Personally I like AdAware with Adwatch better than Zone Alarm but
either one will do the trick.

================================
AdAware is a great tool but is not a
firewall like ZoneAlarm. You need both...
and running...Spybot, A-Squared and
MS AntiSpyware is a good idea also.

And...be sure to keep the definitions
up to date.
