I purchased a PC from my work where I was setup with an account that was on a
Lan an I had equivalent to administrator status. Upon bringing it home, I
wanted to setup my own home network. I went to "Control panel", "System",
"Computer name" and then chose "Change" to join a new workgroup. It then said
to reboot the PC. Upon rebooting I was prompted for a username and password
but no domain! My username and password would not give me access anymore. I
tried using the "true" admin and password combo from our IT guy and even that
did no work. I can't even log on to windows! Please help me!

Thanks,

Hello Jethro:

I know this isn't the solution you want to read, but, you should never
trust a system used by another, ever!

Flatten & rebuild. It will also help with your system's divorce from
the now missing 'at-work' domain - permanently.

Best wishes,

If I acquired a used computer, no matter who previously owned it, the
first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating
system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained,
what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and
spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody
else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddy porn, etc., and I
wouldn't recommend that anyone else do so either.

If you still think that you can trust this machine then you must ask the
server administrator at your workplace for the password that goes with the
local Administrator account.

But then he'd have to BUY a copy of the OS.

Oh well.

Not if his company is willing to loan him the install CD, and the company
has legal licenses for the right number of users.

Having a PC without the installation media is asking for trouble. The OP
should get a copy of a WinXP CD right now (which is perfectly legal) and
make a note of the product key that goes with the CD.

But since the OP seems to be great buddies with his IT dept perhaps they
will provide them with the corporate license key.

Not necessarily. OP hasn't provided enough information for us to know
one way or the other...
