Can't log in to publish

When I publish my site it comes with an error:
"Server error: cannot open file 'filename.htm' for writing";

I know it's because it's trying to publish it as the default web browser
account, which does not have access to write (of course). But for the life of
me I cannot figure out how to log in as someone else to publish! It used to
ask me when I opened frontpage but I must have done something (?). Sometimes
it will ask me if I want to log in as someone else, but not all the time.

Anyway it's getting annoying to have to change the permissions, publish the
site, then change them back!!

Thanks!

You need to contact your web host for instructions on how to publish.

Where is the web site stored now?

Give the actual step your taken to open and then publish.

OK, I have the website saved on my computer. I open frontpage and go to File
> Publish Site... I select FrontPage or SharePoint Services and click OK.

I click Publish Web Site (Local to Remote) and it says:
"Server error: cannot open file 'filename.htm' for writing", It doesn't
prompt me to log in.
So I scoot over to my server and create write and modify permissions for the
default web user and it works. Then I change them back.

Why are you changing the permissions on the default web?
You need to let the FP extensions manage these via the FPSE Admin function.

I don't know. I'm not an expert, I'm just trying to make my site work!

If you don't know, then you should try changing the permissions. To try and correct, remove the
extensions, then IIS, reboot, then reinstall IIS and the FPSE from the Windows CD, then configure
the FPSE extensions.
