I have a ginormous amount of files in my Temporary Internet Files (the
content.ie5 one in Local Settings).

A troubleshooting website told me to sign in through Safe Mode as the
admin, which I thought was a bit weird since my username IS the admin,
and access the files that way.

I found out soon enough that I couldn't unless I enabled the security
settings so that I (as admin) would be able to access my T.I.F.

I was able to free up some space and was planning on finishing the
rest tomorrow, so I restarted to log in under my regular account and
found out that I could not because of insufficient security
privileges.

I am afraid to shut off my computer because I heard that if you
restart, the temporary profile overwrites your regular one and you
lose all your documents.

What do I do now?

Please - do not multi-post.
If you feel your post is relevant to multiple newsgroups - please

What you have done is post the same message in several groups - separately.
Therefore, you will (maybe) receive answers in each one individual instead
of posting one message across several groups and receiving the answers in
all groups... Making it easier on yourself and those who might read and
re-read your message as they peruse the groups looking to help those in
need.

Your assumption is incorrect. It will not overwrite the actual profile.

Do you ACTUALLY logon as "administrator"? Is that your username?

Next time - use something like CrapCleaner to clean up your unneeded files.
As long as you have administrative privs, it should do the job fine... (not
to mention, as long as you had administrative privs - you could have done
the job fine as yourself... Just cleared out the Temporary Internet Files
in IE itself, shrank the size it could grow to something more reasonable
(under 128MB should be fine) and moved on...)

Since you mentioned 'Safe Mode, logon as administrator' --> Can I assume you
have Windows XP Home Edition?
Service Pack level?
Can you logon in safe mode as your user?

I have not tried logging on in Safe Mode as my Username. I was afraid
to, since I was under the impression that the temporary profile would
overwrite my documents (six years' worth of writing, music, art, etc).
I do indeed have Home edition, with Service Pack 2.

When I am not in Safe Mode, the option for "Administrator" does not
appear, just my full name. According to user accounts, my account has
admin privileges.

The reason I had to get access to the files in Content.IE5 was because
I found out that they were the things taking up so much disk space.
The TIF in "regular mode" had only a few hundred KB worth of files,
while the TIF hidden in the Content folder was a few gigs' worth. I am
hurting for disk space.

OK...I have tried logging in under my name in Safe Mode, and I get the
same error. In the meantime, because I can see and access my files in
Safe Mode under Administrator, I am copying all my videos, music,
stories, photos, Sims stuff and drawings into Shared Documents, if
nothing else, just so I can access them.

I think the problem lies in that in giving the Administrator "Full
Control" over my Documents folder, I inadvertently took away access
from the Owner. My question is how I get the access back.

If you think it is because you 'took ownership' away from your own user -
use the same instructions and change it back... Give ownership back to your
username as well as make sure your user has full control (security tab
again, permissions - FULL) over the entire documents and settings\username
directory...
