Can't log on to Domain after installing Fax Services

I am using XPPro connected to an NT4 domain. Everything works fine until I
install Fax Services, afterwhich I can no longer log on to the domain after
starting up. It gets as far as the 'Loading your personal settings' dialog
box and then just hangs there. The PC hasn't actually stopped responding as
there is still disk activity and the colour bar still slides at the bottom
of this dialog box. I have tried every combination of keys I can think of
but nothing will take it beyond this point. (i.e. CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB,
CTRL-TAB, ESC, ALT-ESC, PWR button etc etc). The only option is to turn it
off completely at the switch. The only subsequent entry in the event log is
the 'Couldn't find a domain server' one (or words to that effect)

If I log on as a local administrator then it logs on fine. I can then log
off (without shutting down) and re-log on to the domain. Once the PC has
been shut down I have to go through this process again.
When I can finally get logged on, the fax services work fine.
The PC is a laptop which is used both online and offline. The problem exists
in either of these scenarios.
If I uninstall Fax Services then everything works ok again.

Has anyone any idea what may be causing this?

Thanks
Stewart

Hi Anand,

There are no connections to remote fax printers nor are there any faxes
waiting to be sent.
However, it would seem that if I set the service to Manual then, yes, I can
log in ok. If I then try to start the service manually then it starts fine.
I am happy to use it like this as the service actually starts by itself if I
try to send a fax. However, I am still curious to know what is causing this.

Many thanks,
Stewart

If you turn the Fax Service as Manual Start from Service Control Manager,
can you log in?
Do you have some existing connections to remote shared fax printers? (Go to
Start | Printers & Faxes to find this out)
Open Fax Client console and check whether there are any faxes in Outbox
waiting to be sent.

Thanks,
Anand
