Cant load template

I am not able to load default templates that come with the MS 3003 on my
slide.
After I load an empty slide on to the screen and select format from the menu
followed by the slide design option. I choose either a cloud or any of the
available templates it says "Can not apply the slide template " and "May not
be a powerpoint file. - I know all the files do exist in their respective
directories and that MS 2003 was installed in full on an IBM Think Pad
