A friend of mine is running Windows Media Center. He had a virus and killed
his system so I restored it from an image that was a year old. We put
Service Pack 3 on his computer and updated all critical patches. Installed
Explorer 7 too. Before the virus, he never had Service Pack 3 or IE 7 but I
installed them since I wanted to get him all up to date before he takes his
computer home.

When he took the computer home, to install his personal software, he ran
into similar issues with two of the installations. Quicken 5 and FireFox
will not install. Firefox error indicates that it can't write to the
Registry and the Quicken 5 error states something similar... that there's no
permission to write to the folder. When he brings the computer to my house
on Wednesday, I will verify these error messages or at least explain exactly
what they are. For now, I'm just giving heads up and was wondering if
anyone has an idea.

My thoughts have to do with the Installer. It had to be upgraded to install
SP3. Then again, it may have to do with SP3. Any ideas thus far? Sorry
error description is not detailed (exact at this time).
Thanks

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Repair file and registry permissions, this will do it all for you:

Dial-a-fix 0.60.0.24 336 KB (Freeware)
Info: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles
Download: http://djlizard.net.nyud.net:8080/so...v0.60.0.24.zip

Click the "Tools" button at the bottom that looks like a hammer
and select "Repair permissions" then press the "Go" button.

I read your solution to late but we fixed the issue.
The system is set up so that all applications are installed on the J drive
(not C-partition). I don't know why this was locked up but we formatted the
J-Drive. We were then able to install the applications on the J-Drive okay.
Of course we had to do some rework... uninstalled some apps and re-installed
some stuff (because of the formatting) but that was okay.

Thanks for your help. I will review your solution again in case I run into
this issue again.

I just checked the zip link and can confirm that it's good. The problem is at your end.
