i want to install my old harddrive in the second bay of
dell 8250. windows won't let me. it's a legal version
of xp pro and the problem is thoroughly annoying. i am
grateful in advance for any and all help

Did set the jumpers on the second hard drive to slave?

What do you mean by "Windows won't let me?" What error messages
do you get? Is the hard drive properly jumpered and cabled? Is it
recognized in the PC's BIOS?
