I posted the other day about this but now I have tried pretty much
everything so I'm totally stuck.

Scenario: New motherboard, Soltek SL75-MRN-L, Socket A. New 256MB memory
module. Carry over disks from old system. No PCI or AGP cards installed,
empty MB except for the memory and the disks/CD drive connected. BIOS
correctly configured for the CPU, reports memory OK.

Tried repair install of both Windows XP Pro and Home, as well as new
install on newly formatted DIFFERENT disk. All failed with the same
error, see error description at end of post.

I suspected the CPU might be damaged, so today I replaced the CPU and
tried the installations again. Still the same problem. I'm now down to
the new motherboard as the only remaining component that could be faulty
unless the memory is faulty despite the OK memory test.

Below are the error messages I get from Windows Installer; the install
crashes in the first graphical phase just after the splash screen with
the blue progress bar. I.e. the boot from CD and file copy phases go
just fine.

Note that I've tried using the CD on another system with no problems.
I'm installing from an MSDN CD which has both Home and Pro on it.

The error messages, and the referenced file names, are identical every
time I retry the procedure.

Any ideas?

"An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed.
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
If you are installing from a CD, there might be a problem with the
disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc."

"Press OK to view the setup log file."

Pressing OK shows the following setup log:

It seems the trouble points to either CD ROM or RAM. If you ran Memtest86
and found no RAM errors, that would point to CD-ROM. Is CD-ROM on same IDE
as harddrive? Is jumper set as master/slave/cable select? Is it at end
connector of cable? Are you using 40 or 80 wire cable? What UDMA mode is
motherboard setting data transfer? Try lowering data rate. I have had
CD-ROM problems that were fixed with new CD-ROM drive. It is possible to
have bad cable too. Cables and data rate can cause problems.

Don't see the OP, but if the software is OEM BIOS locked and
you change the mobo, it won't install.

(I include my original post at the end for continuity)

I can't run Memtest86 because I have no Windows O/S to run it from or
create a floppy disk from (only have a laptop w/o floppy).

All drives, including the CD drive, have the same cables/jumper settings
etc. as they had with the old motherboard, haven't changed anything. The
CD reader is not on the same IDE as the hard drive. Cables are 80 wire.

Can't see why the CD reader should be at fault since the entire copy
phase of the installation works fine; also unlikely that the errors
would point to the exact same files every time if the CD drive was faulty.

Hoping for some more help.

You need to have friend with computer with floppy drive.
Http://memtest86.com also can burned to bootable CD but you need CD burner.

I did a search for "asms error" and found:

suggests copying winXP CD to hard drive and installing from there.
To do that, boot off Win98 boot disk or one from:
http://bootdisk.com. Run fdisk delete NTFS partition and re-partition hard
drive. Re-start computer for changes to take effect. Run format C:. Copy CD
\i386 directory to hard drive. Get WinXP boot/setup disks from Microsoft.com
and use them to install WinXP from version on HD, OR may be able to run
Winnt.exe in i386 directory.
