I did a search for "asms error" and found:

This thread blames CD or CD-ROM:
http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread/t-37680.html
This one:
http://www.lecour.net/richard/archives/000050.html
suggests copying winXP CD to hard drive and installing from there.
To do that, boot off Win98 boot disk or one from:
http://bootdisk.com. Run fdisk delete NTFS partition and re-partition hard
drive. Re-start computer for changes to take effect. Run format C:. Copy CD
\i386 directory to hard drive. Get WinXP boot/setup disks from Microsoft.com
and use them to install WinXP from version on HD, OR may be able to run
Winnt.exe in i386 directory.
Good Luck,
-Kent
