I have an XP Pro system.

Not knowing any better I connected my HP1220C Deskjet to a USB port and used
it before I installed any HP software.

Now I'd like to install the software that came with the printer.

I read many hit on the Internet but still can't do it.

When I try I get through a couple of screens where it ask questions and then
get a small popup box containing something like "Setup is installing the
software"

And it hangs ther. For hours.

I download from HP - same thing.

I remove the Windows mini-drivers - same thing.

I guess it is waiting for some resource or something so I would like to try
in Safe Mode but I get the message that "No ports are enumerated"

Can you suggest how I can make the ports availble.

Or maybe I can install in the Printer Port mode and the somehow convert. I
believe that mode installs OK.

Thanks

The most recent driver for your printer is dated 2002:

HP Deskjet 1220c Printer series
http://tinyurl.com/dx7jz
or.....
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=228

The driver for your printer is included with Windows XP.

When I said above:
download from HP - same thing.
The link you show above is where I got it from.

I had this printer on another machine and when I printed in some application
an HP dialog opened showing how the output would look and giving me a chance
to concel if I didn't like it.

I assume that is the HP driver as opposed to the Windows driver.

What do you think?

If you agree, do you have any suggestions as how I can try it in Safe Mode?

Thanks

Here are a couple of things to try:

- Remove the printer from Device Manager, unplug the printer from the
USB port and try the install again. Many USB devices require that you
don't plug in the device till prompted by the software.

- The Windows Installer Update.

I've never been able to find a printer under Device Manager - looked many
times.
I did remove it from Printer and Faxes.
Is that the same thing?

Thanks

I afraid of the windows installer update.

I normally install everything via Mictosoft Update
Do you think I may already have this.
Or is it something "out of the box"

I checked my Widows folder for an NtUninstallKB942288
and do not find it.

How can see what version I now have?

You think I should install it anyway. I want to if it may help!

Also, On Print Server Properties I see a local port connected to Microsoft
XPS Document Writer.

Do you happen to know what that Writer is?

Are local ports, port that do not connect to external hardware?

Lots of questions!
Thanks a lot

At this point, it's hard for me to tell what what you've installed and
what you've removed. Most people are happy to have only the driver
rather than all the rest of HP's (usually) crappy auxiliary software.

However, if you really want the whole thing (the 11.1 MB "full printing
system" download) rather than just the driver (the 1.6 MB "add printer"
download), the best thing to do is to disconnect the printer and clean
things out following the directions here:
http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article_One.htm

Then run the "full printing system" install, which should tell you when
to connect the printer.

You can also see
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/Clea...#LexmarkDriver
but usually MVP Cari's instructions should suffice.

Since you seem to be having a problem installing, I thought maybe the
update could help. Actually, after looking around some more, maybe the
following would do what I intended, cleaning up the previous install, so
the CD install would work:

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

XPS Document Writer shouldn't interfere with USB ports and other
printers.. it's just a format, similar to PDF files, that lets you
convert any combination of graphics, etc. Another slant:

Thanks for all the replies.

One thing I would really like to know is:
Printer and Faxes/File/Server Properties/Ports

I see Serial Ports, Print to File, Local Port, Adobe PDF Port

Shouldn't there be a USB port showing there?

Thanks ba lot
