I've got an application that isn't starting up. The help forums for that App
say to uninstall using MS Installer Cleanup utility.

I downloaded the MS Installer Cleanup utility, and I now have a file named,
"msicuu2.exe" on my PC.

When I double-click the file, it starts to install the utility, I'm asked to
accept the license agreement, which I do, then I get a dialog box stating,
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable". It is looking for a file named, "msicuu.msi". When I click
"cancel" (because I don't know where that file might be), I get an error
dialog stating, "Error 1714. The older version of Windows Installer Clean Up
cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group".

This is my home PC, and I am the technical support group for it. ;(

Hoping that someone can tell me how to get to the point where I can install
and run the Cleanup utility.

When you run the msciuu2.exe program, it creates a temporary
subdirectory under your %temp% path, usually called something like
IXPxxx.TMP where the install files are extracted. You might want to
clean out your %temp% path before running the install program.
Sometimes the install programs don't do cleanup before saving their
files and you end up with a mix of files that don't belong together.

You will also need to be logged in under an admin-level account to
install a program.

Thanks - that got me a little closer.

I cleaned out my temp folder, and retried the install.

This time I still got the "...is on a network resource that is unavailable"
dialog, but I clicked "browse", clicked over to my temp folder where I
eventually found the msicuu.msi file. I clicked it, then got a new error
message, "The file ... is not a valid installation package for the
product....".

My account is AN Administrator account, but it is not THE Administrator
account. I guess that sometimes that makes a difference.

What is the URL from where you downloaded the program? Have you tried
re-downloading it to make sure what you have now wasn't corrupted or
incomplete?

I deleted my old version of msicuu2.exe, and downloaded a fresh version. I
went into every %temp% folder on my PC and deleted everything and rebooted.

I then ran your instructions, and when I executed the VB Script, it gave me
the "...network resource that is unavailable", message, so I "browsed" to and
clicked on the "msicuu.msi" file that I had just extracted, and I got the
"...is not a valid installation package" message. Then when I click "Ok",
"Cancel", I get the "Error 1714..." message box.

So I'm open to more suggestions.

Try WinZip or 7-Zip to extract the contents of the .zip file. That should work.

That's what I did - used Winzip to unzip msicuu2.exe, then ran "StartMsi.vbs".

Willdo, as soon as I get home to run it again (How do I attach a screenshot
to a message in this forum?).

One other thing I should mention is that when I go into Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs, Windows Installer Cleanup is listed.

When I click "Remove", I get the same error path - the "...network resource
that is unavailable", dialog box is displayed, and when I click "Browse", and
select the "msicuu.msi" file, and I get the "...is not a valid installation
package" message.
