Can't Install Apps on Server

Greetings-

W2K sp4, previously sp2; member server.

I've tried to install MS Word (to support another application) when it was
SP2 and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (which has several components)
after the update to SP4 and the installs for these ends up hanging. An "end
task" results in an error dialog: "msiexec.exe not responding".

Another indication that the installs never complete is the fact that the
apps never show up in Add/Remove Programs.

Please HELP with suggestions and advice.
