My system stopped highlighting. I cannot left-click and drag the cursor
across something to highlight it. This problem is present in all
applications. I can still cut and paste by using 'Select All,' then cut paste
from drop down menus. I can also still drag&drop.

please help.

This is from a post by Nass, and I thought it might help with your
problem too. It's for a copy/paste problem, but I suspect they're
closely related. It certainly won't hurt anything to register the .dll's:

" Click Start, double click Run command and type in text box:

Regsvr32 /i ole32.dll and click [OK] or Hit [Enter] On your keyboard

Regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and click [OK] or Hit [Enter] On your keyboard

If the above didn't help read this and there is a Hot Fix:

Be sure your computer is clean from Malwares/Viruses by updating the
definintions and run a complete scan.

Do you still have this problem after logging out and logging back in, or
after rebooting?
