can't hide/unhide partition on external disc

I have 2 identical external NTFS HD's (A & B), 1394-connected one at a time
to a WindowsXP machine. On each there is an identical 2-partition
structure (1 & 2). I use the partition hide utility that came with
Symantec Ghost to hide/unhide one of the partitions on each drive: A2 & B2.

The Ghost utility works as advertised on A. I run the hide command
(gdisk32) on A2, turn off the external HD, turn it back on, and the
partition is hidden. I run the unhide command, turn it off, turn it back
on, and the partition is visible.

With B, it doesn't work that way at all. I run the same commands on B2 and
nothing happens, even if I then go to the device manager and run "check for
new hardware." Nothing. The only way I can un/hide B2 is with Partition
Magic 8.0; to hide, off/on produces the desired result. If I try to unhide
it with PM, PM demands a reboot. This is all very tedious.

Questions:
1. Does anyone have any inkling why B doesn't respond to the Ghost
commands and A does? AFAIK they're identical.

2. If I just leave it unhidden, and use TweakUI un/check "show" for the B2
partition, does that do the same thing?
