I've got a gentleman who will be working in my office for the next few
months. The laptop he was given for use from his work is a Windows 2k pc
configured to be a member of their domain. My office is only set up as a
peer to peer workgroup. My Windows XP computer is sharing the office
printer. When I try to configure his laptop to print of my printer it gives
us an access denied error message. I can't even connect to my computer from
his. His laptop see that my computer exists and is on the network, but is
not allowed to connect or view its shares.

I've tried \\mycomputername\sharname, \\ipaddress\sharename.

I can even ping the ip address but it seems to be a conflict with windows.

I know that I could remove his computer from his work's domain and have it
join my workgroup and it would work then. But that would disable his ability
to VPN into his corporate network. It was also cause him to create a new
local profile that he'd have to use. It would simply cause more headache
than it's worth.

I've even tried to setup Internet printing on my computer. I've installed
IIS but when I open IIS in Administrative Tools, I can't find a "Printers"
folder under the default website to configure premissions.
http://mycomputername/printers does not work.

Other computers on our network that are configured for the same domain as my
problem child but are running Windows XP have no problem connecting to my
computer and printing. It seems to be a conflict between Windows XP and 2k
if the 2k machine is not a member of the same workgroup as the shared pc.

Any ideas would be useful.

Jonathan,

Does the problem computer have a local account setup on it? Or is the owner
logging in to the domain, using the local cache?

Have you tried enabling the Guest account on your computer, for network use, and
giving it rights to the printer? If you can't use Guest access, he'll have to
setup and use a local account on the laptop, matching one which you will have to
setup on your computer.
