I tried to install Secunia PSI and it failed. It hung up so I
uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller Pro.I could no longer connect to a
webpage or email server. (Or anything for that matter). I kept getting a
'could not locate remote server' error msg. I tried system restore but
it said 'cannot restore at this time. No changes have been made'. Tried
another restore point. No joy. I tried WinsockXPFix.exe.
All that did was somehow disconnect my router.
At this point I called Belkin and spent a half hour with support. They
walked me through all the ping tests and status checks. They established
my Internet connection is there, the problem must be with the remote
server. I don't have one of those I'm pretty sure. I just usually
connect to Comcast.net They said perhaps Microsoft Support can do some
kinda Restore over the phone, bypassing my System Restore.
Is this an option? I don't know what to do next.
I have another computer(Win7) wirelessly connected to my router. It
connects just fine. My XP just won't connect to anything on the web. Can
someone tell me my best options before I go overboard? Thanks very much.

The problem you describe sounds vaguely like a situation that occurred with
me on an XP PC. If I may be of assistance, let me suggest that sometimes an
OS gets broken to the point where the only option is to reinstall. If you
keep the old file system you may avoid some work.

Failed how? Could you not uninstall it the proper way, through
Control Paned | Add/Remove Programs?

I would attempt again to install Secuna, then uninstall it properly.

"Remote server" in this context means any web site you might try to
connect to. They can't all be down - if you can't connect to any web
site, this is surely not the problem.

Check out Control Panel | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings
and make sure "Automatically detect settings" is disabled and there is
not proxy server set up.

Go into Safe Mode and use System Restore and restore the OS to a break point created prior
to the failed installation of Secunia PSI.

Thanks David...
This worked very well. Never thought to try System Restore in Safe
Mode. I can get back onto the web. (Thunderbird crashes on startup now,
but I think I can deal with that). Tried the earlier suggested remedies
but nothing worked. I was beginning to sweat, but now I know I'm gonna
have a good day! Thanks again.
