I had to reinstall XP Home Edition. Microsoft.com updates has my computer
listed as already having SP2, which it did BEFORE reinstallaition. Do I
really NEED SP1 & SP2? If so, how do I get microsoft to allow me to download
both/either again?

Did you do a repair install or a format and clean install?
You only need to install SP2 which you can get from the Windows Update
website.

I opted for repair, but it did a reinstallation (as far as I know). I was on
the phone with microsoft with 3 different technicians for 9 hours before one
could finally figure out what was wrong with my computer & get it to hook up
to internet again. I had installed a CD from Norton Antivirus which came
with signing up with netzero & it practically crashed my computer. I have
uninstalled it! The update sight won't let me install SP1 or 2 b/c it is
listed in my history of successful downloads. Do I really need to get both
installed on my compter?

SP2 includes all of SP1. And, you definitely need SP2 and subsequent
updates.

You probably already have it, it was probably slipstreamed into your
installation media. If you go to windows update it will examine your
computer and set up whatever downloads you need.

First, note that all you need is SP2, which includes SP1. No need to
install SP1 first.

Second, it sounds like you probably already have it. Right-click on My
Computer and choose Properties. If SP2 is installed, it will say so
there.
