I'm trying to get an old computer working again, and I can't get
sound. From the control panel, "sounds and audio devices", it says
"no audio device".

If I go over to the "sounds" tab and select a sound to play, it
doesn't play, but says "Windows cannot play the sound .... . Your
sound card may be in use."

Under device manager, the Creative Sound Blaster Live shows up, and it
says that it is working properly. I clicked on "uninstall" there,
rebooted, and nothing changes.

What could be the problem?

I solved the problem. I had a user account for myself and one for my
daughter. I logged on with her account and got sounds. I went back
to mine, no sounds. I checked this a couple of times, and I knew it
must be a setting. In the control panel, sounds and audio devices,
audio tab, for some reason the devices were showing the modem instead
of the sound card. Changing that fixed it, of course.

I have no idea of how it got that way. When I discovered that sounds
were working for the other user account, that ruled out a lot of
possibilities.
