For the last 4 months I've been trying to set up a Home Network. Everytime I try I get the dreaded "Home Networking Was Unsucessful" Then I get to send an ERROR Report. Then I get a reply that Microsoft is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. FOR 4 MONTHS!!!!! Does ANYONE have any ideas? Microsoft tells me to contact Dell, where I got the system, but it is an XP problem. Seems to me they are passing the buck. I can spend $35.00 to call and more than likely won't get it resolved. Trying to talk to these people is harder than meeting the President. ANY help will be great. The darn thing won't even make a Network disk, and it came preinstalled with XP so I don't have an XP disk

relax!! 4 mothes isn't long time, I did solve a problem
once in six monthes, back to your problem: actually you do
need a winxp disk to setup a home network!!

A simple home network with one or more computer connected via hub or router is simple to setup. Each computer must be in the same work group. Picking static IP address such as 192.168.101.nnn with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is all you need. Pick the folders you want to share and share them. Printers are just as easy
I never use the XP wizard to set up the net work, doing it manually is very easy

Your problem is probably solvable, but your using the networking wizard is not
necessary. If the proper (operational) hardware is installed, with the proper
drivers, manual configuration can be done with only a little more effort than
running the wizard. IMHO. YMMV.

Please start by describing your hardware and software. What computers (brand),
with what operating system (name and version), and what networking device (brand
and model)? Do you have a router or switch connecting your computers (brand and
model)? How does it all connect to the internet?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Are you sure Dell is selling computers with no XP setup disk? I have two Dells,
both with OEM license, and both came with a Windows CD (one 2K, the other XP).

And please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining viruses.
Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer when
posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the internet - never
post your address unmunged.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

A very good resource can be found at www.homenethelp.com
and as the previous poster stated, the wizards usually
cause more problems than fix them.
Dell shipped an XP disk with your system and after 30 days
you leave them no recourse but to deny any cliams for not
shipping one.
XP is a cinch to netwrok IF you do some homework up front.
