I have hardware items listed in the Device Manager which
were once on my machine but haven't been for some time. I
also can't get rid of these items. When I try, it comes
back saying it may be in use.

Any ideas?

Boot into Safe Mode and remove them.

Restart the computer and press F8 while it's booting to
get the startup menu. Choose SAFE MODE. You'll be able
to remove them from here.

Nah, tried that... no good. Same message appears.
