Can't get microphone to work.

Bought an inexpensive microphone from Radio Shack and
can't get even a small amount of noise to come out.
Windows Trouble Shooting says to go to the Control
Settings, Speech and click on "Speech Recognition" tab.
I don't have that tab; only "Text to Speech" tab. I'm
plugging it in to a Nividia sound card and I've also
plugged it into the front of the CD burner, but no help.
I've tried all the usual stuff: made sure the microphone
switch was on, Mute was off, volume was up, etc.
Any suggestions?

Plugging it into the headset jack on the CD burner sure didn't help. Are you
sure you are plugging it in the Mic jack, not the Line In or some other
jack?

Plug in a cheap PC mic. If it works, then it's likely that the mic you
purchased is the wrong type for the soundcard. A pre-amp may be needed.

I downloaded and installed the latest version of DirectX 9.0b. That did it for me
