I bought a wireless router, got it working, tried to set up a network so
next week I could loop in another computer but somehow I messed things
up. Figured I'd go back to how the computer was before buying the router
via system restore, but it didn't restore my previous internet
connection capabilities.
The most immediate problems:
1. I no longer have an icon showing ethernet wired connection to my
cable modem. I do get a icon with a red x when I unplug it, but no
longer get icon showing active ethernet connection to the modem. How do
I get the icon back saying the computer is directly connected to the
modem via ethernet, when that's true?
2. The computer no longer connects to the internet via the ethernet
cable even when it does not indicate disconnection. How do I get a
direct wired connection to the modem to work again?
3. When I run the modem to the wireless router and turn on the router,
my computer shows several wireless connections and lists mine first, but
connects me to a neighbor's wireless internet connection instead. How do
I get my computer to connect to my own wireless router, which it
recognizes as existing and as sending signals? (I'm on a neighbor's
wireless right now, and grateful they didn't password it, or I'd be
unable to connect anymore at all!)
At this point I'm just trying to get back to where I started, the
trouble-free wired internet connection I lost when trying to set up a
network.
